HC Deb 08 May 1984 vol 59 c325W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on his recent visit to Liverpool.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

I visited Liverpool on 2 May. In the morning I attended upon her majesty the Queen and his royal highness the Duke of Edinburgh at the opening of the International Garden Festival, and then accompanied the Queen and the Duke on their tour of the festival, including the Liverpool community gardens, many of the international gardens and the festival hall. I found the festival impressive and exhilarating; to have created this in such a short time scale from being one of the most dreadful derelict sites in the country is a marvellous achievement, of which all Merseyside can be proud.

In the afternoon I attended the opening of the Queen Elizabeth II law courts by her majesty the Queen accompanied by his royal highness the Duke of Edinburgh. I presented to her majesty those who had been closely associated with the construction of the new court house.
