asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) whether he will consider increasing the financial help available to householders and tenants who are affected by the smokeless zone legislation; (2) what has been the percentage increase in grants available for those affected by smokeless zone legislation; and how far it has kept pace with inflation.

The cost limits applied to grants for appliances are revised from time to time to take account of changes in prices. Revised limits are shortly to be published. Householders are eligible for a minimum grant of 70 per cent. of approved conversion costs and local authorities can pay a grant of 100 per cent. in appropriate cases. I see no grounds for changing these arrangements.
