asked Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the number of full-time nursery education places at the latest available date as compared to 1980, 1981 and 1982.

The numbers of full-time nursery pupils in England in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983 were 46,543, 46,305, 46,270 and 44,454, respectively. The corresponding numbers of part-time pupils were 168,908, 175,285, 189,131 and 203,371. Information on the number of nursery education places is not available; these figures represent the nearest equivalent—the number of places filled.
