HC Deb 04 May 1984 vol 59 cc239-40W
Mr. Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing the number of apprenticeship training places available in the construction industry for each year since May 1978; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The following table shows the number of apprentices recruited and registered with the appropriate joint industry boards for the construction industry since 1977–78.

year Total Apprentices recruited and registered
1977–78 17,204
1978–79 21,000
1979–80 22,304
1980–81 20,137
1981–82 14,746
1982–83 13,754

Figures for 1983–84 are not yet available. However, the Construction Industry Training Board estimates that about 15,000 craft and technician trainees have been recruited to its model schemes under the youth training scheme. This training may lead on to apprenticeship training in the construction industry. In addition, young people are receiving training in construction skills on other programmes supported under the youth training scheme and through apprenticeship schemes operated outside the youth training scheme.
