HC Deb 03 May 1984 vol 59 cc214-5W
Mr. Leighton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if, as a result of the lower take-up of youth training scheme places than was expected, less is being spent on the scheme than was originally envisaged.

Mr. Peter Morrison

Yes.

Mr. Leighton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many workplaces are being used by the youth training scheme; and how many of those have now been visited by Manpower Services Commission.

Mr. Peter Morrison

At the end of March there were some 10,900 approved schemes under the youth training scheme, many of which use several training locations. All those schemes which have trainees on them have been visited by Manpower Services Commission officials. Exact figures for the total number of workplaces involved are not available.

Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many disabled young people have been given places on the youth training scheme; and how many have applied but been turned down.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The number of disabled young people recorded by sponsors as having entered the youth training scheme at the end of March 1984 is 2,394. However, the careers service estimates that about 6,500 disabled young people had entered the scheme by the beginning of March. Many of these youngsters would not have been recorded by sponsors as disabled. Information is not available on the numbers of young people applying or being rejected for youth training scheme places.
