§ Mr. Freudasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will express the 8.3 per cent. cut to the Workers Educational Association over three years as an annual per capita amount; what representations he has had in respect of the cut; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. BrookeAbout 85 letters making representations about the cuts have been received. Assuming that the number of students attending classes in England taught or organised by the WEA remains at the 1982–83 level of about 171,000, the reduction proposed for academic year 1986–87 is estimated to amount at 1983–84 prices to £1.17p per student per year. Cash grants for years after 1984–85 have not yet been determined. It is expected that increased fee income from those who can afford to pay will enable programmes to be maintained at current levels.
§ Mr. Freudasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how much money was allocated in grant-aid to the Workers Educational Association in each of the years (a) 1979–80, (b) 1980–81, (c) 1981–82, (d) 1982–83 and (e) 1983–84.
