Mr. Younger

The principle changes to the SCottish Education Deprtment students' allowances scheme for the academic year 1984–85 were announced some time ago, and I have now decided that the main rates of grant, reflecting increases of 4 per cent.over the corresponding rates for 1983–84, should be as follows:

  1. i. for students living in the parental home: £1,325;
  2. ii. For students living away from home and attending an establishment outside London: £1,725;
  3. iii. for students living away from home and attending an establishment in London: £2,050.
/

The extra weeks' allowance, paid to students whose session exceed 30 weeeks will also be increased by £2.80 per week in addition to a 4 per cent. increase in line with the main rate of grant. The new rates will be as follows:

i.Home: £21.15 per week
ii. Elsewhere: £34.45 per week
iii. London: £45.25 per week

In addition, 1 students in receipt of grants under the Scottish Education Department's students allowances scheme will continue to be eligible for reimbursement of travelling expenses in excess of £50 already included in the main rates of grant.
