HC Deb 03 May 1984 vol 59 cc211-2W
Mr. Malins

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will estimate the number of Libyan students currently studying at British universities or polytechnics; and if he will estimate how many are in receipt of grants from central Government funds.

Mr. Brooke

It is estimated that in 1982–83 there were 964 students domiciled in Libya taking higher or further education courses in Great Britain who were charged the overseas rate of fee. This fee is expected to cover the full cost of the education provided. One of these students received an award under the overseas research students awards scheme. In addition, there were 15 Libyan students charged the home rate of fee.

Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many students from Arab countries are attending full-time courses at British universities and polytechnics at the latest date for which figures are available.

Mr. Brooke

In the academic year 1982–83, 7,990 students from Arab countries were in universities and institutions of further education in Great Britain. 1,796 of these were on non-advanced further education courses.
