Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people are employed by the community programme in Waltham Forest; and how many of these are long-term unemployed.

Mr. Peter Morrison

At the end of March there were 1,009 people employed under the community programme in the Manpower Services Commission's east London area, which includes Waltham Forest. Of the 1,368 people who had joined the programme in this area during the past 12 months, 96 per cent. had been unemployed for at last six of the last nine months and 69 per cent. had been unemployed for at least a year before joining.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the present regional breakdown of the available places on the community programme.
