Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will take the necessary steps to secure the continuation of the present arrangement for National Health Service spectacles for a period of two years following a cataract excision.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

[pursuant to his reply, 1 May 1984]: Our current advice to health authorities is that they should issue temporary glasses free on loan to patients whose sight is settling down following the removal of cataracts. We have no plans to change this.
