asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will list the collieries closed since the beginning of 1983.

I understand from the National Coal Board that, since 1 January 1983, the following NCB pits have closed:

Parkhill Highhouse
Marley Hill Sorn
Tymawr/Lewis Merthyr Britannia
East Helton Rothwell
Blaengrach Wyndham/Western
Cardowan Westhorpe
Brynlliw Desford
Newmarket Silkstone Cronton
Elsecar Bear Park

Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Energy (1) if he will publish a table showing how many new coal mines have been opened in Wales in each year since 1954.

(2) pursuant to his answer of 27 April, Official Report, columns 621-2, if he will list the names of the collieries in Wales closed since 1954;

(3) if he will indicate the number of employees working at each of the Welsh collieries closed since 1954 before their rundown and closedown commenced.
