Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many tons of glass are currently recycled annually through the bottle bank scheme.

I understand from the Glass Manufacturers Federation that in 1983 76,350 tonnes—74,850 tons—-of glass were recycled through the bottle bank scheme.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will estimate the total number of collection points currently in use by the bottle bank schemes.

I understand from the Glass Manufacturers Federation that there are currently 1,840 bottle bank sites in use in the United Kingdom.

I understand from the Glass Manufacturers Federation that there are currently 278 bottle bank schemes operating in the United Kingdom.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what Government support is currently available to encourage the setting up of bottle bank schemes.

Mr. Waldegrave

It continues to be Government policy to encourage the setting up of bottle banks. This is done through liaison with local authorities and industry and appropriate publicity and advice.
