§ Mr. Kenneth ClarkeThe number of chiropodists employed in the NHS in England at September 1983 (latest provisional figures available) is 2,391 (whole-time equivalents). Although state registration is a legal requisite for employment in the NHS, there will be a small number of unregistered chiropodists who, because they were employed in the health or local authority service prior to 29 June 1964 and by the health service before 1 April 1974, are employed on a protected basis. Separate information as to numbers so employed is not held centrally. Information on membership of professional organisations is not collected by the Government.
