asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many appeals have been made to the supplementary benefits appeals tribunal in Northern Ireland in the last 12 months; in how many cases leave to appeal has been granted in (a) under one month (b) with three months, (c) within six months and (d) over six division of the standard industrial classification 1980. An industrial analysis is not produced for vacancies notified to career sections of job markets.

Comparable industrial analyses are not available for May 1979, but in total there were an estimated 58,100 unemployed claimants and 1,558 unfilled adult vacancies at job markets.

During 1983, the latest period for which information is available, 5,246 appeals were made to supplementary benefit appeals tribunals.

Leave to appeal is required for appeals to the social security commissioner but not to appeal tribunals. During 1983 leave to appeal was granted in 38 cases as follows:

(c) within six months 1
Total 38

Seventeen of these appeals were made by benefit officers and 21 by claimants.
