§ Sir George YoungThe most recent figures available for England are from the 1982 general household survey which showed 26 per cent. of households buying their home with a loan from a building society, 7 per cent. buying with a loan from another source and 24 per cent. of households owning their home outright. There were an estimated 17.4 million households in England in mid-1982.
