HC Deb 30 March 1984 vol 57 c310W
Mr. Chris Smith

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his latest estimate of the number of (a) households owning their home with a building society mortgage, (b) households owning their home with a mortgage from other source, (c) households owning their home outright and (d) all households in England.

Sir George Young

The most recent figures available for England are from the 1982 general household survey which showed 26 per cent. of households buying their home with a loan from a building society, 7 per cent. buying with a loan from another source and 24 per cent. of households owning their home outright. There were an estimated 17.4 million households in England in mid-1982.
