HC Deb 30 March 1984 vol 57 cc319-20W
Mr. Colin Shepherd

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what stocks are available on world markets, excluding the European Economic Community, for purchase by the United Kingdom of food commodities in which the United Kingdom is not self-sufficient; and what is his estimate of the United Kingdom demand for these commodities.

Mr. MacGregor

The United Kingdom imports a wide range of food commodities, details of which are contained in the United Kingdom Overseas Trade Statistics. Information about the main commodities produced domestically, including broad estimates of self sufficiency, is summarised in the Annual Review of Agriculture 1984 (Cmnd 9137) Tables 8 to 18. Stocks of the various food commodities are held throughout the world by both public and commercial bodies but complete information about these and the amounts that would be available for the United Kingdom to purchase, is not readily available.
