§ Mr. McCrindleasked the Secretary of State for Transport if, in the light of recent violence on trains and 274W cross-Channel ferries, he will have discussions with the chairman of British Rail on the adequacy of policing, and the size of the British Transport police establishment.
§ Mr. David MitchellMy right hon. Friend has already discussed with the chairman of the British Railways Board the question of soccer spectator violence following the disgraceful scenes surrounding the recent England-France international. I myself am having discussions with Ministerial colleagues on the same subject and in the light of that we shall discuss further with British Rail what action, if any, should be taken.
§ Mr. McCrindleasked the Secretary of State for Transport, if, in the light of the recent violence on London Transport undertakings, he is satisfied with the level of staffing by British Transport police.
§ Mr. Evennettasked the Secretary of State for Transport whether he is satisfied with the present number of British Transport police officers policing the London Transport Underground network; whether there are any plans to increase police manning levels; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mrs. ChalkerThe level of policing on the London Transport Underground network is a matter for the London Transport Executive and for the GLC. I understand that the executive has proposed an increase from the present level of around 280 police officers to 400 and this proposal is being considered by the GLC.
