HC Deb 29 March 1984 vol 57 cc248-9W
Mr. Roy Hughes

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if the Government intend to meet the pressures to spend more on maintaining and improving the stock of capital assets in the public sector, discussed in paragraph 42 of Cmnd. 9189 by increasing the real level of capital expenditure in future years.

Mr. Peter Rees

The Government do not believe there is any self-evidently correct level of or target for capital spending in aggregate. The case for more public sector capital spending can be considered only on the basis of rigorous individual project assessments.
