HC Deb 29 March 1984 vol 57 cc254-5W
Mr. Gould

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has any declared policy concerning Polish work permit holders who do not wish for political reasons to return to Poland.

Mr. Waddington

In accordance with the statement by my noble Friend the Viscount Whitelaw on 9 March 1983, Polish citizens in the United Kingdom when martial law was imposed or who arrived here before 9 March 1983 have been permitted to stay here for a limited period. Any further applications for extensions of exceptional leave to remain are considered sympathetically.

Polish citizens who arrived here on or after 9 March 1983 are expected to comply with the requirements of the immigration rules. The cases of those who wish to remain here because they are afraid to return to Poland are considered on an individual basis.

These policies apply to Poles admitted as work permit holders as to other Poles.
