HC Deb 29 March 1984 vol 57 c286W
Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what communications he has received from the United Nations or International Red Cross on the use of chemical weapons in the Iran-Iraq war; and if he will make a statment.

Mr. Whitney

A team of specialists appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General has concluded that chemical weapons have been used in the conflict between Iran and Iraq. We are urgently studying its report, and will play a full part in action at the United Nations to follow it up. We condemn the use of chemical weapons wherever it occurs. We are glad to note that the report provides no evidence to substantiate the wholly unfounded claim that the United Kingdom has supplied chemical weapons to Iraq.
