Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many pupils, and what percentage, remain at school after they reach the age of 16 years and after 17 years in each local education authority in January 1983 and January 1984; which of these local education authorities gave education maintenance awards in each of these years; and what was the average size of award made and total number made in each local education authority.

The numbers and proportions of pupils remaining at maintained schools after 16 and 17 years in each local education authority in England in January 1983 are as follows. Equivalent figures for January 1984 are not yet available. Information on the average size and number of educational maintenance awards is not available centrally.
