asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make a statement on co-operation between the European Free Trade Association and the European Economic Community on the elimination of technical barriers to trade.

Mr. Channon

The Government welcome continuing the dialogue between the European Community and EFTA countries aimed at facilitating the free movement of goods, and will play their full part in the joint Community-EFTA ministerial meeting in Luxembourg on 9 April. There is collaboration between Community and EFTA countries in a number of fora including the European standards institutions CEN and CENELEC, aimed at reducing barriers to trade, through the harmonisation of standards and certification procedures.
