In 1981, the latest year for which information on non-psychiatric patients is available, there were an estimated 2,670 discharges and deaths of patients resident in west Cumbria who were treated as inpatients in NHS hospitals, excluding maternity hospitals and units, outside west Cumbria. In 1982, the latest available year for psychiatric patients, there were 110 admissions of such patients resident in west Cumbria to NHS mental illness and mental handicap hospitals and units outside west Cumbria.
