§ 24. Mr. Marlowasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he is satisfied that sufficient action is being taken to prevent a growth of protectionism between the European Economic Community and the United States of America.
§ Mr. ChannonHer Majesty's Government have taken every opportunity, within the European Community and bilaterally, to emphasise to the United States Government the dangers of protectionism and the need to resist protectionist pressures. The Government are also continuing to work within the Community to avoid actions which would strengthen those pressures. I do not underestimate the threat which protectionism poses to our economic well-being; but I am encouraged by the extent to which our objectives, and our awareness of the threat, are shared by other Governments.
