Mr. O'Neill

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many teachers of modern studies there were in schools and colleges in each year since 1978 by education authority area.

The number of teachers of modern studies in secondary schools in full-time equivalent terms is set out in the table. Modern studies may be taught by teachers with a teaching qualification either in modern studies or in other subjects.

Available information on qualified teachers of modern studies in education authority colleges is given in the table.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) how many students in years one and two at school were engaged in modern studies courses in each year since 1978, by education authority;

(2) in how many secondary schools in each education authority modern studies have been offered in years one and two in schools, in each year since 1978; and what proportion of the total number of schools in each area this represents;

(3) in how many secondary schools out of the total for each education authority modern studies have been offered as a non-examinable subject in years three and four in each year since 1978.

Information relating to particular subjects studied by pupils in secondary schools has been collected on a rotating sample basis. Hence it is not possible to give complete answers to the questions as specified, but the following tables derived from the sample information may be useful to the hon. Member.
