asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will propose a legal definition of a Falkland Islander.

Mr. Whitney

There is no legal definition of a Falkland Islander. The nearest equivalent is the definition of a "permanent resident" contained in the Falkland Islands Immigration Ordinance 1965, as amended. This definition comprises—

  1. (a) persons born in the Colony or Dependencies, or of parents who at the time of their birth were ordinarily resident there, or
  2. (b) a person ordinarily resident in the Colony or Dependencies and who has been so resident there for 7 years and since 191 completion of such residence, has not been ordinarily resident for a continuous period of 7 years or more in any other country, or
  3. (c) a dependent of a person referred to in (a) or (b) or
  4. (d) a person who has obtained the status of British subject by reason of a grant by the Governor of a certificate of naturalisation.
