HC Deb 27 March 1984 vol 57 cc117-8W
Mr. Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many members of the Metropolitan police force were asked to resign in 1983; how this compares with figures for the past five years; and whether he has similar figures available for other police forces in England and Wales.

Mr. Hurd

Figures showing the number of Metropolitan police officers required to resign from the force are published annually in the report of the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis. The 1983 figure has not yet been published, but figures for the previous five years are as follows:

Number
1978 8
1979 19
1980 13
1981 20
1982 21

The annual report of Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary records the total number of officers required to resign from provincial police forces in England and Wales following disciplinary proceedings. Unlike the figures for the Metropolitan police these do not include officers required to resign after being found guilty of the disciplinary offence of criminal conduct. Again, the 1983 figure has not yet been published, but figures for the previous five years are as follows:

Number
1978 20
1979 27
1980 33
1981 26
1982 53
