HC Deb 27 March 1984 vol 57 c132W
Mr. Tony Lloyd

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he has any information on the level of employment in Trafford park, Manchester, for 1954, 1964, 1974, and an estimate for 1984.

Mr. Alan Clark

No. The latest available information is for the Stretford jobcentre area, which includes Trafford park, and is from the September 1981 census of employment. At September 1981 there were 62,300 employees in employment in the area. The corresponding figure at June 1974 was 75,700. Figures for years prior to 1971 are not available on a comparable basis.

Mr. Patchett

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the current rate of unemployment in the Grimethorpe, Cudworth, Brierley and Shafton employment areas, respectively.

Mr. Alan Clark

The areas specified are all within the Barnsley jobcentre area. Percentage rates of unemployment are calculated for complete travel-to-work areas only and not for their constituent parts. On 9 February, the rate of unemployment in the Barnsley travel-to-work area was 15.9 per cent. The travel-to-work area comprises the Barnsley, Hoyland and Wombwell jobcentre areas.
