At September 1981 there were 62,300 employees in employment in the area. The corresponding figure at June 1974 was 75,700. Figures for years prior to 1971 are not available on a comparable basis.

Percentage rates of unemployment are calculated for complete travel-to-work areas only and not for their constituent parts. On 9 February, the rate of unemployment in the Barnsley travel-to-work area was 15.9 per cent. The travel-to-work area comprises the Barnsley, Hoyland and Wombwell jobcentre areas.
