HC Deb 27 March 1984 vol 57 c149W
6. Mr. Marlow

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the cost per week per worker calculated by dividing the gross cost by the total numbers in employment in the United Kingdom of (a) housing benefit, (b) the National Health Service budget, (c) the social security budget and (d) the total budget of his Department.

Mr. Fowler

On the basis given in my hon. Friend's question, the figures for Great Britain are that on average housing benefit costs £3 per worker per week, the National Health Service £13, social security in total £29, and the National Health Service and social security combined, including administration, £43.

These figures are based on Great Britain data for 1983–84, rounded to the nearest £1. Figures for Northern Ireland are not readily available in the form requested.
