asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the number of sheltered dwellings funded by (a) metropolitan district councils, (b) non-metropolitan country councils and (c) London boroughs.

Estimates of sheltered dwellings at 1 April 1983 were provided by local housing authorities in England in their housing investment programme returns. The numbers owned by the authorities and estimates of those owned by housing associations, some of which may have been partly funded by authorities, are as follows:
