HC Deb 26 March 1984 vol 57 cc43-4W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what has been the level of support for research by the Medical Research Council in the last year; and what percentage increase is proposed for next year.

Mr. Brooke

The grant-in-aid to the Medical Research Council in 1983–84 is £113.7 million. This is being used to support research partly through making grants for specific research and partly to meet the cost of postgraduate training awards and fellowships. Further support is given by maintaining the council's own research establishments by maintaining external scientific staff based in other host institutions and by paying international subscriptions and other central expenses. The council's grant-in-aid for 1984–85 will be £117.2 million which represents an increase in cash terms of 3.1 per cent.
