HC Deb 26 March 1984 vol 57 c39W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will name those projects in Scotland in which local authorities made specific provision in pursuit of their water supply responsibilities for wildlife and nature conservation in the course of capital schemes under the provisions of section 48 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

Mr. Ancram

Section 48 does not apply in Scotland, nor is comprehensive information about individual water supply projects held centrally. My right hon. Friend has however commended the spirit of section 48 to regional and islands councils.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list all Forestry Commission schemes in Scotland approved over the last three years to date that may result in severe acidification of streams adjacent to planted areas.

Mr. John MacKay

The question of the extent to which afforestation schemes in certain parts of the country may lead to increased acidification in streams and other waters is the subject of current investigation and research. It may be some time before conclusions can be drawn.
