HC Deb 26 March 1984 vol 57 cc88-9W
Miss Maynard

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what are the most recent figures for the numbers of strip searches in Armagh prison; and how many are being carried out on each woman.

Mr. Scott

[pursuant to his reply, 23 March 1984, c. 597]: I refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave to the hon. Member for Kingston upon Hull, North (Mr. McNamara) on 23 March 1984, at column 597.

Miss Maynard

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland why some women in Armagh prison are being strip-searched more often than others.

Mr. Scott

[pursuant to his reply, 23 March 1984, c. 597]: Prisoners are strip-searched as part of the normal admission and discharge procedure and before going on inter-prison visits. Searches are also carried out on a random basis on prisoners attending remand hearings and on other occasions. Prisoners who regularly enter and leave the prison will, as a consequence, be subject to the strip-search procedure more often than those not involved in such movement.
