HC Deb 23 March 1984 vol 56 c605W
Mr. Tony Lloyd

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) under what circumstances prisoners in Scotland are denied the opportunity to practise their religion, including attending services; and if he will make a statement.

(2) how many prisoners in Scottish prisons are not allowed to practise their religion, including attending services; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ancram

There are no circumstances in which a prisoner in Scotland is denied the opportunity to practise his religion or to see a chaplain or, as far as practicable, a minister of his own denomination. A prisoner may be debarred from attending a religious service only if the governor considers that he would be likely to create a disturbance.
