HC Deb 22 March 1984 vol 56 c520W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Energy whether he proposes to amend the Coal Mining (Subsidence) Act 1957 to clarify issues that have occurred in recent years over subsidence claims.

Mr. Giles Shaw

I expect shortly to receive the report of the Waddilove committee which has been considering the system of repair and compensation for coal mining subsidence damage. I will be considering its recommendations with care and will inform the hon. Member and the House of any proposals as soon as possible.

Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will estimate the average cost of subsidence per tonne of coal mined.

Mr. Giles Shaw

In 1982–83 the amount charged to the National Coal Board's profit and loss account in respect of subsidence for deep mining activities was £131.5 million, equivalent to 1.26 per tonne of coal produced.
