§ Mr. Skeetasked the Secretary of State for Energy whether he proposes to amend the Coal Mining (Subsidence) Act 1957 to clarify issues that have occurred in recent years over subsidence claims.
§ Mr. Giles ShawI expect shortly to receive the report of the Waddilove committee which has been considering the system of repair and compensation for coal mining subsidence damage. I will be considering its recommendations with care and will inform the hon. Member and the House of any proposals as soon as possible.
§ Mr. Skeetasked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will estimate the average cost of subsidence per tonne of coal mined.
§ Mr. Giles ShawIn 1982–83 the amount charged to the National Coal Board's profit and loss account in respect of subsidence for deep mining activities was £131.5 million, equivalent to 1.26 per tonne of coal produced.
