HL Deb 22 March 1984 vol 449 cc1458-9WA
The Earl of Longford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

  1. (a) Whether Shane O'Doherty, a prisoner at Wakefield Prison, is now being held in solitary confinement;
  2. (b) Whether he is forbidden to speak to other prisoners; and
  3. (c) What justification there is for this treatment.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Home Office (Lord Elton)

Mr. O'Doherty is not being held in solitary confinement but he is currently segregated in the interests of good order and discipline under the provisions of Prison Rule 43. He is not forbidden to speak to other prisoners.
