HC Deb 22 March 1984 vol 56 cc578-9W
Mr. Sims

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether Her Majesty's Government consider there to be a relationship between the incidence of hyperactivity in children and chemical additives in food and drink; to what extent his Department sponsors research in this field; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Patten

I refer my hon. Friend to my reply of 15 March 1984, at columns259–60, to the hon. Member for Fife, Central (Mr. Hamilton).

Mr. Randall

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what are the results arising from his Department's expenditure on drug-orientated therapy for hyperactive children;

(2) to what extent his Department, through the National Health Service, funds drug-orientated therapy for the treatment of hyperactivity in children; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Patten

Information is not available, centrally or locally, on methods of treatment adopted by individual doctors in dealing with clinical conditions where hyperactivity is a symptom. Consequently, it is not possible to identify the cost of a particular form of treatment, or to measure the results of that treatment.
