HC Deb 21 March 1984 vol 56 c458W
44. Miss Boothroyd

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what advice his Department gives to travellers to Sudan regarding the application of Islamic law.

Mr. Whitney

As my hon. Friend the Member for Shoreham (Mr. Luce) told the hon. Member for Barnsley, West and Penistone (Mr. McKay) on 25 January, at column 599, those intending to visit the Sudan and who consult the Foreign and Commonwealth Office before departure are advised that the new Sudanese Islamic laws must be respected. They are also told that they should take care not to infringe local custom, particularly concerning alcohol, dress and behaviour.

49. Mr. Bellingham

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on current relations between the United Kingdom and Sudan.

Mr. Luce

We have good relations with Sudan. There is a long and friendly association between our two countries.
