HC Deb 21 March 1984 vol 56 c455W
29. Mr. Randall

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent consultations he has undertaken with the Government of Syria concerning the Lebanon.

Sir Geoffrey Howe

We have frequent contacts with the Syrian Government, I had extensive discussions about Lebanon with Syrian leaders during my visit to Damascus in January 1984.

41. Mr. Weetch

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what initiative he has in mind to help bring peace and stability to the Lebanon.

Sir Geoffrey Howe

It is for the Lebanese parties to negotiate a long-term solution of their differences. We very much hope for a successful outcome of the reconciliation talks in Lausanne and remain ready to help where we can.
