HC Deb 21 March 1984 vol 56 c492W
Mr. Speller

asked the Secretary of State for Energy with what fuel other than manufactured gas he expects to replace natural gas for industrial and home heating.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

The choice of fuels to replace piped natural gas, which could include electricity, coal, oil and liquefied natural gas as well as manufactured gas, will depend on their relative future competitiveness in the market.

Mr. Speller

asked the Secretary of State for Energy when he expects supplies of natural gas to the United Kingdom from all sources to have to be replaced by manufactured town gas; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

Significant supplies of piped or liquefied natural gas are expected to be available to the United Kingdom market until well into the next century.
