asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will state the number of people unemployed in the borough of Sunderland and the metropolitan county council of Tyne and Wear on 1 January 1983 and 1 January 1984, or the nearest possible date.

In January 1984, there were 26,489 unemployed claimants in the area covered by the Sunderland, Southwick and Houghton-le-Spring job-centres, and 97,143 in the Tyne and Wear metropolitan county. A comparison with January 1983, when the figures were 27,905 and 98,380, respectively, is affected by the 1983 Budget provisions.
