HC Deb 20 March 1984 vol 56 c424W
Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will now estimate the income from charging overseas visitors for National Health Service treatment for the first 12 months of the scheme.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The estimated income from these charges alone for the period 1 October 1982 to 30 September 1983 was £1 million. In addition, the National Health Service will have benefited to an extent which cannot be precisely calculated from the charges paid for treatment in NHS hospitals by individuals who opted to become private patients rather than pay overseas visitor charges.
