The total amount collected by the Post Office in respect of dog licences was £1 million in 1980–81 and £0.9 million in 1982–83, the latest year for which information is available. The payment made by the Department to the Post Office to cover the costs of issuing dog licences was £2.8 million in 1980–81 and £3.3 million in 1982–83, the deficit was thus about £1.8 million in 1980–81 and £2.4 million in 1982–83.
