HC Deb 20 March 1984 vol 56 cc393-4W
Mr. Maclennan

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many applications for (a) naturalisation, (b) registration and (c) registration of a minor as a British citizen he estimates will be received in 1984–85 and granted in that year.

Mr. Waddington

Analysis of the numbers of applications received in the recent past indicates that the total number of applications received in the financial year 1984–85 will probably be within the range 44,000 to 57,000.

The estimate of applications during the financial year 1984–85, on which the Department's plans are based, is 52,500, comprising 19,950 applications for naturalisation, 24,150 for registration and 8,400 for the registration of a minor. Estimates for grants in the same year are 24,500 for naturalisation, 31,160 for registration and 10,840 for registration as a minor. These estimates of grants take into consideration the work in progress at the end of the previous financial year, the estimates of applications likely to be received, the expected level of productivity and the provisos set out in annex B to the recent White Paper, Cmnd. 9183.
