HC Deb 19 March 1984 vol 56 cc322-3W
Mr. Alan Williams

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he has any plans to make regulations relating to the safety of pushchairs; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Fletcher

There are already safety regulations covering pushchairs—the Perambulators and Pushchairs (Safety) Regulations 1978.

I intend to remake these regulations separately, under the Consumer Safety Act 1978, calling up the relevant up-to-date British standards for technical requirements. The revised standard for safety requirements for pushchairs has almost been completed by BSI and will be published shortly. New regulations will follow as soon as possible. The BSI is presently reviewing the perambulators safety standard. When this is available I shall make new safety regulations covering perambulators.

I further intend to make Carrycot and Transporter (Safety) Regulations, based on a new British standard which is also being prepared by BSI.
