HC Deb 19 March 1984 vol 56 c323W
Mr. Lawrence

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is satisfied that the Prevention of Terrorism Bill in its present form will contribute to the reduction of terrorism in the United Kingdom by warring middle eastern and Iranian factions.

Mr. Hurd

The Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Bill implements the recommendation made by Lord Jellicoe in his review of the operation of the legislation that the exceptional powers of arrest and detention, whose application has hitherto been restricted to persons concerned in acts of terrorism connected with Northern Irish affairs, should be applied specifically to acts of international terrorism. I believe that this change will be of considerable help to the police in their fight against international terrorism of all kinds.
