HC Deb 19 March 1984 vol 56 cc371-2W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the numbers of claimants receiving and the amount of benefit paid to people, broken down into the following categories: (a) standard housing benefit rent allowance, (b) standard housing benefit rent rebate, (c) standard housing benefit rate rebate, (d) certificated housing benefit rent allowance, (e) certificated housing benefit rent rebate, (f) certificated housing benefit rate rebate and (g) housing benefit supplement, for the latest date available.

Dr. Boyson

We estimate that the number of people in receipt of housing benefit, by benefit type, is as follows:

Number
Certificated rent allowance 530,000
Certificated rent rebate 1,873,000
Certificated rate rebates 3,047,000
Standard rent allowance 300,000
Standard rent rebates 1,730,000
Standard rate rebates 3,810,000

The number receiving housing benefit supplement is about 200,000. These are included in the standard rebate figures. We estimate that expenditure on housing benefit supplement will amount to some £30 million in 1983–84.

Based on local authority subsidy claims, it is estimated that expenditure in 1983–84 will be:

£ million
Certificated rent allowance 372
Certificated rent rebate 1,255
Certificated rate rebate 713
Standard rent allowance 138
Standard rent rebate 713
Standard rate rebate 534
