HC Deb 19 March 1984 vol 56 c340W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what consideration has been given by the Council of Ministers to changing the name of the European Assembly to the European Parliament by an appropriate amendment to the treaty of Rome.

Mr. Rifkind

None. The term "Assembly" appears in the treaties but the institution has described itself since 1962 as the "European Parliament" and this term is generally in use throughout the Community. Whatever terminology is used, the nature of the institution is not affected. We shall continue to use the term "Assembly" in legal texts or where it is necessary to distinguish that institution from the Westminster Parliament.
