HC Deb 15 March 1984 vol 56 c219W
Mr. Terlezki

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the amount, for the latest available year, of radioactive waste disposed of under the terms of the London dumping convention, expressed as a percentage of limits set by that convention.

Mr. MacGregor

The International Atomic Energy Agency, as adviser to the London dumping convention on radiological matters, has recommended that the annual activity released rate limits in waste dumped shall be 105 curies for alpha emitters, 107 curies for beta/gamma emitters and 1011 curies for tritium. For 1982, the most recent year in which such dumping took place, the numbers of curies in the waste dumped by all countries were 1,428 from alpha emitters, 49,539 from beta/gamma emitters and 77,449 from tritium, amounting to 1.4 per cent., 0.5 per cent, and 0.00008 per cent, of the recommended released rate limits respectively.
