HC Deb 15 March 1984 vol 56 cc234-9W
Mr. Boyes

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) what was the level of unemployment for Tyne and Wear and the counties of (a) East Sussex, (b) Essex, (c) Berkshire and (d) Buckinghamshire for each year since 1974;

(2) what was the level of unemployment, at a suitable date, in the metropolitan counties and the Greater London council area for each year since 1974;

(3) what was the level of unemployment at a suitable date, for the boroughs of (a) Sunderland, (b) Watford, (c) Southend and (d) Chelmsford in each year since 1974.

Mr. Alan Clark

The following table gives the total numbers unemployed in the areas specified in February each year from 1974. The figures from 1974 to 1982 relate to registered unemployed and those for 1983 and 1984 are for unemployed claimants. The comparisons are affected by the change in the basis of the unemployment count in October1982 and the 1983 Budget provisions which meant that some men aged 60 and over no longer had to sign on in order to receive supplementary benefit or national insurance credits.
